Todd Gurley 2021 Outlook
The Falcons did not re-sign Gurley, which came as no surprise. It was always unlikely the injury-ravaged veteran would return for a second season in Atlanta, where he served as a change-of-pace back in the season's final month and a half. "It's really difficult to justify Gurley staying," Tori McElhaney of The Athletic opined, adding that it "may make more sense for the Falcons to look to the draft for a replacement if there is a running back on the table for them in the second or third round." While Gurley was possibly the best all-around back in the league as recently as 2018, he faded down the stretch in 2020. He is still only 26 years old but knee issues have sapped his effectiveness and are clearly going to end his NFL career prematurely. The Rams gave up on him last summer and his one-year, incentive-laden contract with the Falcons is over. Someone will sign him for 2021, but Gurley will likely never again be an every-down back. Fantasy managers should keep that in mind if/when they consider the former superstar.
Todd Gurley 2020 Outlook
The Falcons signed Gurley, the 2017 NFL Offensive Player of the Year, with hopes he will have a resurgent season and boost a running game that ranked 30th in the league last season (85.1 rushing yards per game). According to NFL.com's Maurice Jones-Drew, there was a lot happening in Los Angeles last season that affected Gurley's performance, from injury concerns to questions about how he was used in the offense. This season, in Atlanta, he'll join a Dirk Koetter-led offense in which he'll thrive. Jones-Drew contends the veteran back should stay relatively fresh all season because he won't have to carry the entire load, with quarterback Matt Ryan and wideouts Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley stretching the field. This is the most talent the sixth-year pro has had around him at any point in his career, laying the foundation for a big comeback over 2019. "I think he's going to be an awesome fit for us," Ryan said of Gurley. "And I'm glad we have him." Indeed, it wasn't like he didn't do anything last season. Gurley started the year slowly, but he turned it on in the second half, finishing as a top-20 fantasy back in five of his final eight games. In all, Gurley had eight top-15 finishes at the position.
