Taylor Heinicke 2023 Outlook
The Falcons added a veteran presence to their quarterback room with the signing of former Commanders QB Heinicke. NFL Network reported the pact as a two-year deal worth up to $20 million. The 30-year-old Heinicke adds experience to the QB room alongside second-year pro Desmond Ridder, who is locked in as the starter. An Atlanta native, Heinicke started 24 regular-season games the past two years in Washington, including 15 in 2021. Over the past two seasons, he's completed 64.0 percent of his passes for 5,278 yards with 32 touchdowns and 21 interceptions. The Falcons have said Ridder is the starter. Heinicke was well aware of it when he signed his two-year contract. "I'm going to try to be the best backup I can to him," Heinicke told reporters. In essence, Heinicke is who he is -- a stellar, well-liked teammate who's proven he can win when thrust onto the field though he hasn't done enough to firmly win a starting job. As such, Heinicke knows how to approach the job and is adamant he'll be prepared if Ridder goes down.

Taylor Heinicke 2022 Outlook
The Commanders did a great deal of homework on this year's top collegiate quarterbacks, and they came away from those evaluations most intrigued by UNC passer Sam Howell, as Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post reported. Washington ultimately selected Howell with the first pick of the fifth round of the 2022 draft, making him the sixth signal-caller to hear his name called. Still, as Jhabvala further reported, head coach Ron Rivera was clear during his post-draft press conference that Heinicke would remain the backup. Rivera explained: "Taylor's a very efficient quarterback that handles things very well and brings some excitement to it. ..." Heinicke, who wound up starting 15 games for Washington in 2021 after a Week 1 injury to Ryan Fitzpatrick, completed 65 percent of his passes last season. However, he also threw for 20 TDs against 15 interceptions, a ratio that leaves much to be desired. According to Pro Football Network, Heinicke is certainly a competent backup if nothing else, and while he will serve as Carson Wentz's clipboard holder in 2022 -- his presence should at least provide some comfort to investors in the other components of this offense, his future with the Commanders was complicated by the Howell selection.

Taylor Heinicke 2021 Outlook
Heinicke will face competition with Kyle Allen to be the No. 2 quarterback for the Football Team with Ryan Fitzpatrick locked in as the starter. Allen came to Washington from the Panthers after Ron Rivera was hired as the Football Team's head coach last year. He started four games for Washington before he fractured an ankle. His season ended on injured reserve. Allen underwent surgery but expects to be fully healthy for the start of training camp (that he was on the field for the start of the team's OTAs at the end of May adds to the expectation). That being the case, his knowledge of coordinator Scott Turner's offense when both were in Carolina could help him in the battle. That said, Heinicke appeared in two games for Washington. He scored 13 fantasy points in Week 16 against Carolina, and he passed for 306 yards, a touchdown and an interception, along with 46 rushing yards and a score, in an impressive performance in the playoffs against Tampa Bay. Make no mistake, Fitzpatrick is all but certain to be the starter for as long as he's in the locked and upright position making him the only viable play for fantasy managers.
