Jameis Winston 2022 Outlook
The Saints attempted to upgrade at quarterback this offseason, including by trying to trade for Deshaun Watson, but in the end they've decided to go back to Winston, who went 5-2 in his first year as a starter with the team last season, but he tore the ACL in his left knee and sustained MCL damage on Oct. 31. The former No. 1 overall NFL draft pick and Heisman Trophy winner posted a career-high passer rating of 102.8 with the Saints last season, completing 95 of 161 passes (59 percent) for 1,170 yards, 14 touchdowns and three interceptions. He also ran for 166 yards and one touchdown and lost one fumble. As ESPN.com's Mike Triplett notes, although Winston averaged just 186 passing yards in his six full games, he still flashed his big-play ability with four completions of 49-plus yards. And he proved that he could overcome the turnover issues that plagued him during his first five NFL seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. If Winston is healthy and ready to go, all expectations are that he'll be the Week 1 starter in New Orleans. If it takes Winston longer than 10 months to be ready to go, Andy Dalton, signed to the roster in March, would fill in. Whatever the case, the return of Michael Thomas and addition of rookie WR Chris Olave will serve the Saints' QBs well.
Jameis Winston 2021 Outlook
A day after Drew Brees announced his retirement, Winston re-signed with the Saints on a one-year deal worth "up to" $12 million. Coach Sean Payton has said he wants to see Winston compete for the starting job. The first overall pick in the 2015 draft has shown that he can get it done at the NFL level, and he has had a full year in the New Orleans system. As Profootballtalk.com notes, Winston has more experience than his competition, Taysom Hill, having made 70 starts at quarterback. Winston led the NFL with 5,109 passing yards in 2019 and became the first quarterback in NFL history with 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in a single season. His only Pro Bowl came in his rookie season of 2015. Whether he can beat Hill out might ultimately depend on how much he soaked up from Payton and Brees as a backup last year. That said, more than a few observers feel that Winston opens camp as the early favorite despite the Saints' success with the more athletic and mobile Hill, who went 3-1 as the starter when Brees missed four games last season.
Jameis Winston 2020 Outlook
Not only is Winston not going to get paid like a starting quarterback this year in New Orleans, he's not even going to make as much as most second-string quarterbacks. A former first-round pick of the Buccaneers, Winston's new contract carries a base value of just $1.1 million. With incentives, Winston can make up to $3.4 million more. But if Drew Brees stays healthy Winston likely won’t hit those bonuses. And even if Winston does end up playing and performs well, he'd still make less than $5 million -- a bargain price for a NFL quarterback. Still, Winston said he signed with the Saints in large part because he believes he can learn a lot playing for Sean Payton and sharing a quarterback room with Brees. In fact, Winston is looking forward to getting a "Harvard education" in New Orleans. Worth noting, serving as Brees’ No. 2 paid off handsomely for Teddy Bridgewater this offseason as he signed a three-year, $63 million contract with the Panthers. Winston is still just 26 years old and has a long career ahead if he can learn to cut down the interceptions. Indeed, if not for his 30 INTs last year, seven of which were returned for a touchdown, he likely would have competed for a starting gig somewhere this offseason.
