Jameis Winston 2018 Outlook
While Dirk Koetter is only 13-18 in his two seasons as head coach in Tampa, he has been instrumental in the Winston’s progress and development. By getting the nod to coach a third season, Koetter earns an opportunity not afforded to his recent predecessors. Among the reasons for sticking with Koetter includes the fact that Winston suffered a shoulder injury that impacted his performance last season, forcing him to miss three games and playing hurt in three others. But more to the point, Koetter, who was the Bucs offensive coordinator in Winston’s rookie season, was promoted with the expectation he would continue to develop the franchise quarterback and fulfill Winston’s promise as a No. 1 overall pick. And despite the injury issues, at least up until the season finale, Winston completed more than 70 percent of his passes with eight touchdowns and two interceptions. Turnovers remain an issue for Winston. He struggles throwing the deep ball. And he'll open the 2018 season with a three-game suspension. That league-mandated absence will understandably drive his price down come draft day, perhaps to the point he's available as waiver-wire pickup upon his return. Given his potentially high-end receiving corps, Winston will be worth keeping on your radar.
Jameis Winston 2017 Outlook
The Bucs expected Winston to take a big step forward in his development during the 2016 season. And as FanRag.com recently noted, most every worthy measurable you can find suggests he did just that during his sophomore NFL season. Winston was a more accurate passer, a more potent passer and a better decision maker in 2016. He was better against the blitz, more efficient in the red zone and more of a weapon when he broke outside of the pocket. There are issues, however. His footwork and throwing mechanics are still a bit subpar, and he simply has to be sharper mentally. He also needs to work on his ball security. Led by Winston's 23 total giveaways, the Bucs turned the ball over 27 times during the 2016 season, tied for sixth-most in the league. All that said, Winston became the only player in NFL history to pass for 4,000 yards in each of his first two seasons and also set a club record with 28 touchdown passes and that (along with the addition of speedy wideout DeSean Jackson and rookie powerhouse TE O.J. Howard) is enough to keep him fantasy relevant.
Jameis Winston 2016 Outlook
Newly promoted HC Dirk Koetter, formerly the team's OC, said he's going to continue to call the offensive plays and that's good news for Winston. The truth is, the Buccaneers got rid of former HC Lovie Smith primarily to maintain the relationship between Koetter and Winston. The Bucs did make significant progress on offense last year, and having an experienced DC (with HC experience) in Mike Smith gives Koetter some latitude there as well. So does Winston. "We've got a quarterback who wants to be coached, is eager to be here," Koetter said. "(Our relationship) will have to change a little bit but trust me, I'll be spending a lot of time with Jameis." That's good news for Winston and fantasy owners. After a solid rookie campaign -- 58.3 completion percentage, 4,042 passing yards, 22 TDs, 15 INTs, 84.2 passer rating -- Winston made the Pro Bowl (after several QBs dropped out). Winston certainly became a better player as the season progressed. With a full offseason to improve, we could see a sophomore leap from Winston, who recently said his focus this offseason is better conditioning. That won't hurt either.
