Adam Thielen 2020 Outlook
As ESPN's Matthew Berry noted, Thielen dealt with injuries last season, but still was one of the best wide receivers in football and now, with Stefon Diggs in Buffalo, he should get an incredible target share from Kirk Cousins. The Vikings did draft Justin Jefferson and added Tajae Sharpe via free agency, but Berry is adamant that the passing offense for Minnesota will run through Thielen. ESPN's Mike Clay backs that contention, noting that Thielen has played at least 80 percent of the Vikings snaps in 18 games in 2017, 16 games in 2018 and nine games in 2019; his target share was right at 26 percent during each of those stretches. Now with Diggs gone, Clay believes Thielen is positioned for a huge role and is a great "post-hype" target in 2020. Worth noting, for his career, when Thielen gets at least nine targets, he averages 22.8 fantasy points per game (last season, Michael Thomas was the only WR to average more than 20 points per game). Also, as FantasyPros pointed out, there were five wide receivers who scored a touchdown more often than once every 10.0 targets in 2019: Mecole Hardman (6.8), Thielen (8.0), Sharpe (8.8), Kendrick Bourne (8.8) and Willie Snead (9.0). Thielen is yet another later pick with WR1 upside.
Adam Thielen 2019 Outlook
At the start of last year's training camp, teammate Stefon Diggs inked a five-year deal worth $72 million with a $15 million signing bonus. This offseason the Vikings and Thielen agreed to a four-year extension worth a maximum of $73 million. To say that Thielen earned the raise is an understatement. Since signing his previous deal, Thielen had racked up 204 receptions for 2,649 yards and 13 touchdowns. His 295 targets over those two seasons is tied for sixth-most in the league during that span. When juxtaposed with Diggs' statistics over that same period, Thielen’s totals come out far ahead. Diggs has 166 receptions for 1,870 yards and 17 touchdowns since 2017, and while those numbers may be impressive, it's clear Thielen remains the Vikings’ No. 1 target -- in part because he's often used as a big slot receiver, a role that creates mismatches against smaller slot defenders. In 2018, Thielen produced 100-yard receiving efforts in eight straight games to start the season, which established an NFL record. And for his career, the 28-year-old Thielen has appeared in 80 games with 42 starts coming in the past three seasons. He has 293 career catches (including a career-high 113 in 2018) for 3,897 yards and 19 touchdowns. Even if the targets diminish a bit, expect Thielen to continue playing the lead role here.
