Adam Thielen 2023 Outlook
Thielen's days as a go-to receiver are over, but he should be able to pack some value in his first season with Carolina. The Panthers have a new coach in Frank Reich and a rookie quarterback in overall No. 1 draft choice Bryce Young so his vast experience and ability to get open will be highly valued with the Panthers. Thielen spent nine seasons with Minnesota and found the end zone 55 times so he won't suddenly lose that ability. He'll just need Young to deliver. Thielen had 24 touchdown receptions over the 2020-21 seasons before dropping significantly last year under first-year coach Kevin O'Connell. Thielen hasn't topped 1,000 yards since his back-to-back Pro Bowl seasons in 2917-18. Thielen had 21 100-yard outings in his time in Minnesota, but his high was just 72 yards last season. He had 11 or more receptions five times, topped by a 14-catch effort against the Buffalo Bills in 2018. His high in 2022 was nine. Over the final three games, Thielen had four receptions for 30 yards as it was clear his future was elsewhere.
Adam Thielen 2022 Outlook
Injuries held back Thielen in 2021, but he remains as reliable a receiver as there is in the league when healthy. In fact, he's not without upside even as he begins to show signs of aging (Thielen will be 32 by the time the regular season starts). Even with Justin Jefferson solidifying his spot as the Vikings' WR1 last year, Thielen held his own early in the season. As ESPN.com notes, the veteran receiver had 63 catches, 686 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns through his first 11 games and sat seventh at the position in fantasy points, trailing Jefferson by only 14 points. Thielen went down with an injury in Week 13 but not before he continued his scoring dominance. Remember: Thielen has a whopping 24 TDs on 202 targets over the last two seasons. Reasons for optimism this year? A new, offensive-minded coaching staff led by former Rams coordinator Kevin O'Connell. As for his health? The 10-year vet said he put in ample work this offseason to get his body back to a good spot. "I'm probably feeling the lightest I've ever felt," Thielen said. "I'm excited about the way I feel coming off an injury, coming off a surgery. I feel great, I'm excited to get back in here and just compete again and play football." Don't be afraid to invest when the price is right; a late WR3 pick seems reasonable.
Adam Thielen 2021 Outlook
As Fansided.com recently noted, Thielen has turned out to be one of the best players to suit up for Minnesota in a long time. But he turns 31 years old in August, and it's safe to say Justin Jefferson is now the team's top downfield weapon. That said, Thielen still finished last season with an impressive 14 touchdown catches. That's obviously a bonus, but one that's difficult to predict from a fantasy perspective. As FantasyPros.com notes, Thielen scored a touchdown every 7.7 targets in 2020, which was the eighth-best ratio over the last 10 years. Even if he remains a primary weapon in the red zone, expecting him to continue scoring at that pace is a reach. In addition, the veteran hasn't ended a year with 1,000 receiving yards since 2018. With Dalvin Cook locked in as the Vikings’ dominant offensive weapon (the offense is unlikely to change under Klint Kubiak), Jefferson an ascendant talent and Irv Smith Jr. appearing to be on the verge of a breakout, it's fair to question how Thielen's role plays out this year. All that said, fantasy managers shouldn't be afraid to take a shot here if value dictates.
