Eric Ebron 2019 Outlook
How do you follow up a career-best season in which you double your previous combined touchdown totals? Well, score some more. That's the mentality that Ebron is taking into his second year with the Colts after tallying 13 receiving TDs in 2018, which was good for second most in the league (behind Antonio Brown) and most among tight ends. Thirteen scores is apparently not enough for Ebron, who wants to chase the recently retired Rob Gronkowski's tight-end record of 17 touchdowns. Ebron enjoyed a career resurgence after being cut by the Lions last offseason, but he's out to prove his end-zone dominance and strong play last year was no fluke. "If I go and get 17," he added, "I help my team win games. ..." While matching last year's total seems like a reach, ESPN's Mike Clay notes that in the five seasons Frank Reich has been a HC or OC, his offenses distributed a target share of at least 23 percent to the team's tight ends. That includes a share of at least 27 percent each of the past three seasons. Again, touchdown regression is a thing. And Jack Doyle will be back. Ebron had minor groin surgery this offseason (he was running routes at full speed in June and should be ready for training camp). But considering all that, expecting top-10 output still seems reasonable enough.
Eric Ebron 2018 Outlook
Ebron signed a two-year deal with the Colts (worth a maximum value of $15 million) after he was released by the Lions, who cut him rather than paying him $8.25 million this season. Ebron gives the Colts a pass-catching complement to Jack Doyle, who caught 80 passes last year despite the absence of QB Andrew Luck. For his part, Ebron caught 53 balls in Detroit but came on strong down the stretch pulling in four or more catches in six of the last seven games. The 10th overall choice in 2014, he started 37 games and made 186 receptions for 2,070 yards and 11 touchdowns over his career. And make no mistake, Ebron signed with the Colts for the opportunity to catch passes from Luck. We'll see how that plays out, but regardless of the QB, ESPN.com's Mike Wells notes that new HC Frank Reich's offense is predicated on exploiting mismatches. Reich often did that with the tight ends while serving as Eagles offensive coordinator the past two seasons. Given that, Ebron could find himself in numerous mismatch situations, but none of that will matter if he's not able to catch the ball. He dropped 6 percent of the passes thrown his way last season, the 18th-worst rate in the NFL. Nonetheless, assuming Luck returns, Doyle and Ebron would be a solid combo at the position.
