John Brown 2020 Outlook
One of the lesser-hyped but very effective 2019 acquisitions was the Bills' signing of Brown, who had a career-high 72 receptions and 1,060 receiving yards last year. In addition to the catch and yardage totals, the speedster benefited from a career high in targets while also averaging 14.7 yards per catch. That made him a great draft bargain last summer as he ended up averaging 14.7 fantasy points per game. In fact, as ESPN's Matthew Berry points out, even though Brown was WR24 on a points-per-game basis last season, he was actually 13th in target share among wide receivers. However, the Bills were 25th in pass percentage last season and now with Stefon Diggs in the house and Josh Allen entering his third season, maybe they will decide to pass more, but Berry believes the identity of this team is still very likely to be run-first, especially with Allen's rushing ability. As Berry put it, "Diggs will command a healthy target share, so with less volume headed Brown's way, Brown feels like a better real-life NFL player than fantasy asset in 2020." CBSSports.com believes Brown is the type of receiver who could still excel with minimal targets, but he's not someone to draft as a starter in most formats. Consider him a fringe WR3/WR4 in all formats.
John Brown 2019 Outlook
Worth noting, when the Bills pursued Brown during free agency a year ago, he passed on their offer and signed with Baltimore instead. But after seeing how the Bills improved over the course of the season, Brown is excited to join the mix. Indeed, as ESPN's Bill Barnwell suggested, given how valuable the ability to win downfield is in today’s NFL, it's surprising that Brown was given a modest three-year deal to join Buffalo. The last time he played with a quarterback who earned a grade of 75.0 or higher on the season was 2015, and Brown went for over 1,000 yards that season. Even last season, he was on pace for 1,068 yards before Lamar Jackson took over and the Ravens’ coaches abandoned the downfield passing game. Brown still finished the 2018 season averaging more yards per route (1.50) than Tyrell Williams (1.41) and Adam Humphries (1.43), who both got bigger deals. For fantasy owners, the real appeal here is the big-play ability. Of the 215 receptions in Brown's career, 40 have gone for 20-plus yards and 13 have been good for at least 40 yards. So, beyond the fact that Brown's speed should command the respect of opposing defenders, Buffalo News staffer Vic Carucci expects to see Josh Allen targeting him quite a bit on deep balls. Draft him with that big-play ability in mind (as opposed to consistent weekly production).
