Allen Robinson 2023 Outlook
Back in the state where he played his college ball, Robinson hopes a homecoming of sorts can launch him into a new phase of productivity. A stress fracture in his left foot limited Robinson to only 10 games last season, his lone campaign with the Los Angeles Rams. Consider it a far cry from the Penn State product’s 2015 Pro Bowl days with Jacksonville, or even the pair of 1,100 plus-yard seasons he enjoyed in his four years with the Chicago Bears. Robinson, who won’t turn 30 until the closing stages of preseason, had long receptions of 22 yards or more in just three games as a Ram. After snagging a touchdown catch in his second game with Los Angeles, he went three games before grabbing another, then took three games between his second and third scoring catches. Robinson gives second-year Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett, himself an alum of Pennsylvania college football at Pitt, a stable veteran target. Pittsburgh -- and the pair itself -- hopes Robinson and Pickett can cultivate a connection early and often.
Allen Robinson 2022 Outlook
Robinson signed with the Rams on a three-year, $46.5 million that includes $30.7 million fully guaranteed. As NFL.com suggested, Robinson has been one of the most under-appreciated receivers in the NFL for years. He carried the Bears' offense, generating back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2019 and 2020. Robinson led all WRs with 21 games of 70-plus receiving yards during that span. He struggled to find any rapport with rookie quarterback Justin Fields or Andy Dalton while playing through injuries in 2021. Robinson earned 410 receiving yards on 38 catches for one TD in 12 games -- his worst stats in any season in which he's played at least 10 games. When healthy, Robinson is a difference-making talent who can box out in the red zone and make contested catches. According to Next Gen Stats, Robinson leads the NFL with 140 tight-window targets (less than 1 yard of separation) since 2018, with 51 catches on tight-window targets in that span (third-most). Robinson has played five-plus games with six different starting QBs in his career: Mitchell Trubisky (35 games), Blake Bortles (33), Fields (10), Nick Foles (eight), Chase Daniel (five) and Dalton (five). Each of the QBs has a sub-90 career passer rating and averaged 7.0 or fewer career pass yards per attempt. Now he gets to play with Stafford in a Sean McVay offense. We recommend buying the dip here.
Allen Robinson 2021 Outlook
As NFL.com suggested, Robinson is one of the most under-appreciated star receivers in the NFL. The wideout carried the Chicago offense last season, yet team officials failed to lock the 27-year-old down on a long-term deal. The two sides will have until mid-July to come to an agreement or Robinson will play on the franchise tag. Robinson tied for first in the NFL (with Stefon Diggs) with 12 games of 70-plus yards receiving in 2020 . In the past two seasons, even with shoddy QB play, Robinson ranked third in total receptions (200), third in receiving yards (2,397), and second in receiving first downs created (131). In fact, with his sure hands and ability to dominate on tight-window receptions (per Next Gen Stats, he has the most catches with less than one yard of separation in the NFL since 2018), Robinson has produced throughout his career despite playing with less than stellar trigger men. Further evidence of that: He graded as a top-5 receiver by Pro Football Focus, despite receiving the most (61) inaccurate targets among receivers. The hope for this season? New veteran QB Andy Dalton can do as much for A-Rob as he did for A.J. Green in Cincy. Even if not, rookie Justin Fields' skills might be a closer match to Robinson's than we've seen from past QBs.
