Mike Evans 2020 Outlook
Evans joins Randy Moss as the only receivers to start their careers with five consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. Should Evans do it again in 2020, he'll stand alone in the record books. Last year, Evans had 1,157 yards and would have had more had he also not had to sit out a few games (three total) due to a hamstring injury. If you look at yards per reception as a result, you'll see that Evans had a 17.3 yard-per-reception average. Most of that was at the point of catch, too, which is where Evans excelled. He had the third-best yards at catch per reception average with 13.6. But from a fantasy perspective, there were shortcomings. He finished fifth in points per game among wideouts, yet Evans was a top-20 fantasy wideout in just 38.5 percent of his starts. What's more, he scored 62 percent of his points in just four games. Although the presence of Chris Godwin and newcomer Rob Gronkowski will keep defenses honest, new QB Tom Brady hasn't had two pass-catchers top 1,100 receiving yards in the same season since 2011, when Gronkowski and Wes Welker did it. This year, Brady could strike up a rapport with either Evans or Godwin -- or both. That being the case, there's a reasonable argument to be made for picking the slightly cheaper option.
Mike Evans 2019 Outlook
As CBSSports.com suggested, Evans may have just finished his most complete season as a wide receiver -- and then the Buccaneers lost both DeSean Jackson and Adam Humphries during the offseason. Evans caught 60 percent of his targets for the first time in his career and set a career best in yards per reception (17.7). He was just the third receiver in the past 10 years to average better than 11 yards per target (minimum 100 targets). But looking back, Evans’ role seems to have diminished somewhat in recent seasons. According to ESPN's Mike Clay, Evans averaged a target share of 26 percent as a rookie before bumping to 30 percent in 2015 and peaking at 31 percent in 2016. His usage has declined in recent seasons, with his share falling to 24 percent in 2017 and hitting a career low at 23 percent last season. Clay believes it's possible Evans' usage could bounce back under new HC Bruce Arians, but Arians already said he thinks fellow wideout Chris Godwin could push for 100 receptions, and that the team will need to find ways to feature O.J. Howard. But Clay added: "Evans is still one of the game's top 'big' receivers and has finished top-five in end-zone targets each of the past three seasons, so he remains a fringe WR1." Draft accordingly.
Mike Evans 2018 Outlook
Evans has been the focal point of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offensive identity ever since the team drafted him No. 7 overall in the 2014 NFL Draft. From Day 1, Evans has ruled the team’s aerial attack: He's recorded over 1,000 yards receiving in each of his four seasons, and already stands at No. 3 in the franchise's record book for most all-time receiving yards by a Buccaneer. If health remains on his side, he'll find himself atop the list before the Bucs play their final game of this season. Besides the yards, Evans has plenty of other Buccaneer records under his belt in just four seasons of play -- and at just 24 years of age. Evans holds the franchise record for most receiving touchdowns in a season (12 -- twice), most receiving touchdowns by a rookie in a season (12), most consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons (4), and his current receiving yards per game average (75.4) is also best in Bucs’ history. Given all that, there's certainly no reason to believe Evans won't remain Jameis Winston's go-to-guy for the foreseeable future (although Winston will miss the first three games this year to suspension). So, even though Evans is coming off his "worst" season as a pro, fantasy owners shouldn't be running away; instead enjoy the discount that comes following a disappointing campaign.
