James White 2022 Outlook
White recently admitted a return to the NFL seemed inconceivable at times after he went down with a season-ending hip injury last year. By the third game of the 2021 season, the running back was one of the Patriots' most productive offensive players and showed early chemistry with rookie quarterback Mac Jones. But any hopes White had for the rest of the season changed when he was carted off the field during the second quarter of a Week 3 loss to the New Orleans Saints. The hip subluxation was not ideal for a running back in a contract year who is approaching the age of 30. Still, the Patriots re-signed White in March, giving him a two-year deal worth a reported $5 million. White told ESPN.com the Raiders and Patriots showed most interest. "(New England) wanted me back, that's all that matters," he said. White was the third team captain to re-sign after Devin McCourty and Matthew Slater. He rejoins Damien Harris, Rhamondre Stevenson, J.J. Taylor and incoming rookies Pierre Strong Jr. (Round 4) and Kevin Harris (Round 6) in this backfield. Another veteran back, Brandon Bolden, moved on to Las Vegas via free agency. Even with a change of coordinator in New England, expecting White to retain his role as the primary receiving back in a situational rotation should be the default.
James White 2021 Outlook
The Patriots are retaining a key backfield playmaker. ... White will remain in New England on a one-year, $2.5 million fully-guaranteed deal. White saw a decrease in production in Cam Newton's first season under center. The pass-catching back went from 95 targets and 72 catches in 15 games in Tom Brady's final season to 62 targets and 49 receptions in 14 tilts in 2020. Still, White represents a top-shelf pass catcher out of the backfield, with the ability to take check downs, make defenders miss, and create first downs. In his seven years in New England, White has generated 168 receiving first downs and even in a down season last year, White's 20 first downs tied for sixth among RBs. He's also generated 25 receiving scores since 2015. White's return bolsters the Patriots' running back position, which returns top option Damien Harris, along with 2018 first-round pick Sony Michel, second-year player J.J. Taylor and core special teamer Brandon Bolden. "I can't even put into words how much you can learn from a guy like James. I really look up to him a lot," Harris said in December. ... Here's hoping Newton, or whoever is under center for the Pats this fall, remembers how effective White can be.
