Derek Carr 2023 Outlook
Unless he suddenly reveals an undiscovered running talent at age 32, Carr's relocation to New Orleans doesn't greatly affect his fantasy ranking. The Raiders' all-time leader in passing yards and touchdown passes has always been good for about 250 yards and a TD or two every Sunday. On the flip side, his 99 interceptions since 2014 are second only to Matt Ryan (106) among active QBs. He rejoins Saints coach Dennis Allen, who drafted him with Oakland in 2014, and could flourish under longtime OC Pete Carmichael Jr. -- especially if WR Michael Thomas is finally when Week 1 rolls around. Second-year WR Chris Olave looks like a star and RB Alvin Kamara remains a high-volume target (off-field legal issues are a concern), but the Saints didn't draft a receiver until the 195th pick. Although a change of scenery didn't work out so well last year for Russell Wilson, Carr is motivated. "I can't wait to get to another building and show just what I'm capable of," he said after signing.
Derek Carr 2022 Outlook
Now that the Raiders have Davante Adams, they are set to make a run at the Super Bowl over the next few years. Leading the way will be Carr, who is now joined with his former college teammate. While there were rumors this offseason that the Raiders would explore moving on from Carr, that won't be the case with Adams in the fold. ... Carr led the Raiders to the playoffs in 2021 as he set a career-high in passing yards (4,804). He was the unquestioned leader on the team after Jon Gruden resigned midway through the season. Carr has significantly improved as a passer over the last three seasons, averaging 7.8 yards per attempt. That is quite an improvement since earlier in his career when he averaged just 6.7 yards per attempt from 2014 to 2018. Now Carr has Adams, tight end Darren Waller and receiver Hunter Renfrow at his disposal. What does the addition of Adams do? In their two seasons as Fresno State Bulldogs, Adams led the FBS in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns while Carr led the division in passing yards and passing touchdowns. With new head coach Josh McDaniels coming on board as well, expect the offense to offer ample opportunity for Carr to leverage all his weapons. Don't look past Carr if you wait on drafting your QB.
Derek Carr 2021 Outlook
The Raiders finished 8-8 in 2020, their first time reaching .500 since going 12-4 in 2016. In his third season under coach Jon Gruden, Carr had one of the best years of his career -- completing 67.3 percent of his passes for 27 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He registered a new career-high in passer rating at 101.4. And while it's safe to assume Carr is locked in for 2021, it's worth noting he does not have any more guaranteed money on his contract, which runs through 2022. The lack of guarantees means the Raiders could explore changes at the position at any time, and so questions about Carr's long-term future with the club remain. This is nothing new. Ever since Gruden took the Raiders' job in 2018, Carr’s name has been linked to trade rumors annually, so talk of the three-time Pro Bowl quarterback not being in Las Vegas is the norm. Still, Carr's top target Darren Waller insists Carr is "a guy that can take us everywhere we want to go. ..." After what Carr displayed in 2020, the Raiders would be better served spending their resources on upgrading their defense, and fantasy managers can continue to view Carr as a viable QB2/streaming option.
