Derek Carr 2020 Outlook
Carr is coming out of his third offseason with Jon Gruden. Heading into each one, rumors about his job security have run rampant. The rumblings reached a fever pitch this spring with the combination of Tom Brady hitting free agency, Carr's dead cap hit dropping by nearly $20 million and the fact that the Raiders held two picks in the top 20 amidst a loaded QB draft class. Instead, Gruden and GM Mike Mayock used the No. 12 overall pick on wide receiver Henry Ruggs III before drafting two more skill players in the third round. Carr said he's been kept in the loop the entire time and never had any concerns about his future. And what about the money the Raiders invested in former Titans starter Marcus Mariota? Carr said it's part of the plan to put together the "best quarterback room in all of football." Others might read the situation differently, especially given Gruden's well-known admiration for Mariota's game. But Carr, who set career highs in completion percentage and yards last season while cutting down on interceptions and taking far fewer sacks, is focused on finding ways to score more points and win more games. And if he doesn't? Mariota, with his incentive-laden contract, is standing by.
Derek Carr 2019 Outlook
NFL.com’s Gregg Rosenthal recently reminded readers the Raiders started the offseason telling anyone who would listen that Carr was their franchise quarterback, then backed it up by ignoring the position in the draft. More importantly, the Raiders have spent the last four months doing everything possible to upgrade his supporting cast. Sure, they lost 32-year-old TE Jared Cook and 34-year-old WR Jordy Nelson, but more than made up for it by adding Antonio Brown and Tyrell Williams. As ESPN.com’s Matthew Berry suggested, that's a trade you'd make in both fantasy and real life. Berry went on to note that since 2015, Carr ranks fourth in percentage of deep passes that are on target (70.8 percent). So he can throw it deep. He just hasn't recently (recording the lowest average air yards per throw in the NFL last season). But Brown, with a league-high nine deep touchdowns last season, and Williams, fifth in yards per catch since entering the NFL in 2015, give him legitimate downfield threats. Remember: Only Dan Marino (68) threw more TD passes in the first two years of a career than Carr (53). That means Carr surpassed the initial two-year totals of even Peyton Manning and Russell Wilson, both of whom threw 52. With rookie running back Josh Jacobs on board to help keep opposing pass rushers honest and a defense that will likely give up enough points to force him into shootouts, Carr jumps into the QB2 conversation.
Derek Carr 2018 Outlook
Could a rebound be coming? New HC Jon Gruden will be a definite factor in Carr's continued development, with all the coaching intensity and fire and eyebrow raises that have become Gruden's signature. "I want him to be tough on me," Carr said upon learning of Gruden's hiring. "Let's go fix [the] problems that I have and let's do what I need to do to win championships." Carr has known Gruden since filming the Gruden QB Camp segment back in 2014. They got along great then, and in each interaction since. Beyond that, Carr's excited to have some stability in his football life. The three-time Pro Bowler will start his fifth NFL season with his fourth head coach, fourth go-round with an OC and third offensive scheme. But incoming OC Greg Olson, who worked with Carr during the QB's rookie year, believes that the 10-year contract given to the offensive-minded Gruden will give Carr the kind of continuity he needs to reach his full potential. 2016 showed what kind of success the Raiders can have with a healthy and productive Carr in the lineup. Gruden and Olson can't do much to ensure the first part of that equation, but Carr’s production will be one of their top immediate priorities in Oakland.
