Teddy Bridgewater 2022 Outlook
As USA Today reported, Bridgewater joined the Dolphins on a one-year deal that could pay him up to $10 million with an opportunity to back up third-year Tua Tagovailoa, who has missed time early on in his young career. He started 14 games for Denver in 2021, throwing for 3,052 yards, 18 touchdowns, and seven interceptions while completing 66.9 percent of his pass attempts. While his time in Denver likely put the kibosh on Bridgewater's days as an NFL starter, he's shown he can compete and win games. In fact, it's fair to wonder if Bridgewater might have been the long-term starter for Minnesota if he didn't suffer a horrific knee injury that essentially cost him two years of his career. Whatever the case, since being drafted in the first round out of Louisville in 2014, Bridgewater has played for four teams and has actually led them to a collective record of 33-30 in 63 starts. Since leaving the Vikings, however, he's 16-19. He'll be an upgrade over Jacoby Brissett as the No. 2 in Miami and gives fantasy managers invested in key components in this offense, players like Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle and Mike Gesicki, some hope they'll retain value if Tua is hurt. The addition of Skyler Thompson, a seventh-round draft pick in April, is more of a long-term issue. He's unlikely to challenge for the No. 2 spot this year.
Teddy Bridgewater 2021 Outlook
The Panthers traded Bridgewater to the Denver Broncos in exchange for a sixth-round pick the day before April's NFL Draft. Carolina will still be paying Bridgewater $7 million this season and Denver will add $3 million -- a fair price in getting a quarterback their new general manager, George Paton, knows well from his time in Minnesota. In his one season in Carolina, Bridgewater basically performed as expected. He completed 69.1 percent of his passes with 15 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also rushed 53 times and had five rushing touchdowns. The former Vikings' 2014 first-round pick has bounced from team to team over the last several years of his career, now landing on his third team in as many seasons. Bridgewater hasn’t been quite the same player since suffering a devastating injury during Vikings’ 2016 training camp which caused him to miss the better part of two seasons. Still, the Broncos see potential. "Acquiring Bridgewater adds competition, experience and a strong veteran presence to our quarterback room," Paton said. "He's a talented player and leader who's had success in this league in a number of different situations." With Drew Lock's grip on the starting spot somewhat tenuous, those interested in the Broncos’ supporting cast should be watching this situation closely.
Teddy Bridgewater 2020 Outlook
The Panthers have moved on from Cam Newton. Bridgewater, who spent the past two seasons in New Orleans backing up Drew Brees, is the replacement. Bridgewater started five games in 2019 -- all wins -- and proved he can be a successful full-time starting quarterback once again. The time in New Orleans was key for Bridgewater’s ultimately landing in Carolina. In 2018, the quarterback worked with Joe Brady, an assistant under Sean Payton in New Orleans. After helping LSU win a college national championship, Brady is now in Carolina as the coordinator under first-year coach Matt Rhule. Bridgewater's experience with Brady and the Saints’ system should help the transition as the Panthers look to revamp their entire operation. During his five starts last season, Bridgewater showed he hasn’t lost the ability to get the ball out quickly, which could play well with his new offensive weapons including Christian McCaffrey and receiver D.J. Moore. While Bridgewater didn't throw many deep threats in New Orleans last season, he made enough splash plays to show he can still put the ball on the money when needed. How the deep-ball is utilized in Brady's offense -- especially with speedy threats like Robby Anderson and Curtis Samuel on the outside -- will be something to keep an eye on in Carolina this preseason.
