Robert Woods 2022 Outlook
Woods was having a good season in 2021 before he tore his ACL, and he was expected to recover and stay with the Rams in 2022. But after Los Angeles signed Allen Robinson in free agency, Woods, who had spent the last five years there after playing four years before that for the Bills, became expendable and was traded to Tennessee. Titans offensive coordinator Todd Downing was on the Bills' staff in 2014 when Woods was in Buffalo, so there's some familiarity there. The Titans were in the market for a wide receiver to work opposite A.J. Brown after cutting Julio Jones, and Woods was their choice. But after Brown was shipped off to Philadelphia in a surprising draft-day trade, Woods might be asked to do more. While the team did select receiver Treylon Burks in the first round shortly after dealing Brown, having a solid veteran presence in the starting lineup will be important. And Woods isn't without upside. In fact, Woods, who is expected to return from his "clean" ACL tear in time for the start of the season, has been one of the most productive receivers in the NFL. He topped 1,000 yards from scrimmage each season between 2018 and 2020. Not being on the field with Ryan Tannehill for a full offseason won't be ideal for developing chemistry with his quarterback, but the Titans will make out here if Woods, who hopes to be ready to take part in training camps, returns to form.
Robert Woods 2021 Outlook
With Matthew Stafford taking over at QB, the Rams' offense has the weapons to do damage. Woods and Cooper Kupp represent do-it-all wideouts who can win both before and after the catch. Second-year receiver Van Jefferson should see more reps in 2021. Tight end Tyler Higbee offers upside with an expanded role. And running back Cam Akers proved he could shoulder the load. Don't discount DeSean Jackson's addition and what the speedy veteran can bring to the offense if he stays healthy. Stafford loves to throw it deep, and while Jackson would obviously be the Rams' primary downfield threat, Woods also stands to benefit from the upgrade to Stafford. As USA Today noted, "Woods isn't a burner, but he can still win over the top with his savvy route running and the way he sets up defensive backs by selling underneath routes. Whether it's on posts, corners or straight-up go routes, Woods will make more plays down the field with Stafford under center than he did with Jared Goff." Given this, our expectation should be an uptick in Woods' yards per reception, something fantasy managers will appreciate, assuming he continues to command a target share similar to what we've seen in the recent past, including last year's 23-plus percent.
