Keenan Allen 2022 Outlook
As Pro Football Network put it, "Are you a fan of consistency? What about route-running savants who specialize in mid-phase separation? Perhaps a dash of age-adjusted value and a side helping of over a 25 percent target share from an elite quarterback? If you answered 'yes,' Allen is still your cup of tea. ..." It's a fair assessment. Since 2017, Allen has averaged 102 catches for 1,184 yards and just over six touchdowns. He's also played in 78 of 81 regular-season games during that time span. He has at least 135 targets in five straight years, with four seasons of 100 or more receptions and at least 1,100 receiving yards. In those campaigns, Allen has recorded 26 percent of the team targets and 47 percent of the team's wide receiver targets. This past season, Allen broke the franchise's single-season receptions record -- which had already belonged to him -- with 106. He did that last season even with fellow starter Mike Williams setting a single-season career high with 1,146 receiving yards. Williams and Allen both went over 1,000 yards in a season for the second time together. The first was in 2019. Williams finished ninth in the NFL in receiving touchdowns (nine) and 11th in yards per reception (15.1). So even if Williams continues to play well, Allen should still be in line for his 130 targets, 100 receptions, 1,000 yards and six touchdowns.
Keenan Allen 2021 Outlook
If high-end consistency is your thing, Allen is your guy. The veteran wideout has at least 97 catches in each of the last four seasons. In 2020, Allen had 992 receiving yards and tied a career high with eight touchdowns in 14 games. While Allen was 12th in fantasy points among wide receivers, SI.com's Michael Fabiano notes he was seventh at the position in terms of points per game average. Allen became the favorite receiver for Justin Herbert, just like he was for Philip Rivers for so many years. In fact, Allen was even better in the 13 games he played with Herbert last season than he was without him, ranking fifth in fantasy points per game while leading all wideouts in targets per game (10.7). By the way, that consistency is long-standing. The Pro Football Hall of Fame is now displaying the jersey and gloves Allen used during the Chargers' Week 14 victory over the Falcons. In that game, Allen recorded his 623rd career reception while playing in his 99th game. He surpassed Antonio Brown (622 receptions in 100 games) for the most receptions by a player in NFL history in their first 100 contests. With Herbert working behind an upgraded offensive line, don't let the change in coaching staff worry you here.
Keenan Allen 2020 Outlook
As Fansided.com notes, coming off his third consecutive season with over 1,000 receiving yards (in fact, he's posted at least 136 targets, 97 catches, 1,196 yards and six touchdowns over those three years), Allen has quietly established himself as one of the best wide receivers in the NFL. This year, however, Allen will have a new quarterback for the first time in his career. Philip Rivers wasn't brought back by the Chargers, which means either Tyrod Taylor or Justin Herbert will start in Los Angeles this season. Even so, Allen still heads into fantasy draft season with a high-end WR2 asking price. Remember, he produced eight games in the top 20 this past season, including four games with 20-plus points. He did have a bad six-game stretch around midseason though, failing to score more than 12.3 fantasy points in any game. Also worth noting, as ESPN's Mike Clay pointed out, Allen's reputation for being an injury risk needs to be forgotten. Allen hasn't missed a single game since 2016. On the other hand, 2016 second-round pick Hunter Henry has yet to play a full 16-game season, missing all of 2018 and a total of seven games over the other three seasons. Consider Allen a fantasy WR2 with WR1 upside.
