Latavius Murray 2021 Outlook
Murray's second year with the Saints was nearly identical to his first. He got the exact same number of carries as he did in 2019 and ran for 19 more yards but one fewer touchdown. His production in 2021 will likely determine if the Saints keep him around in 2022, as he will turn 32 just before the playoffs start this season. If he shows any signs of slowing down, he will likely be released during the final year of his contract in an effort to clear up more cap space. If he still plays like one of the best No. 2 options in the league, however, his chances of sticking around increase. Also possible, he might be busier this season than he has been over the last two years. As Fansided.com suggested, with Drew Brees having retired, the Saints will look to the run game more often, and that could mean an uptick in action for Murray. Remember, the veteran has averaged better than four yards a carry and seven yards per reception over the course of his career. As Kamara and Michael Thomas may draw most of the attention from defenses, Sean Payton could lean more heavily on the thunder to Kamara's lightning.
Latavius Murray 2020 Outlook
The dual threat of nimble Alvin Kamara and the hard-pounding Murray are an exceptional complement to each other -- and to quarterback Drew Brees. As DKNation.com reminded readers, last year when Kamara went down with a high-ankle sprain, Murray took over the backfield for two games against the Bears and Cardinals tough run defenses, rushing 48 times for 221 yards and three touchdowns and adding a whopping 14 receptions for 86 yards and another touchdown. He likely wouldn't see those same kinds of touch numbers in a prolonged stint as the starter, but we know the team trusts him to be the every-down back if they need to call on him. But there are issues. First and foremost, the presence of Taysom Hill can cut into Murray’s role. Beyond that, Sean Payton doesn't appear to be done flexing his creative offensive-scheme muscles, adding another multi-purpose veteran to the fold in running back Ty Montgomery. As a mid-May signing, Montgomery isn't guaranteed to make New Orleans' final roster, especially with Kamara and Murray already headlining the RB room and Dwayne Washington in the mix. But make no mistake: Murray is the top handcuff here. And he's a valuable one at that.
