Theo Riddick 2019 Outlook
Riddick is yet another veteran running back whose role might be limited by a change to a new offense. It seems likely that the Lions will rely more heavily on the duo of Kerryon Johnson and C.J. Anderson under incoming OC Darrell Bevell, with the expectation of an overall emphasis on the team’s rushing attack. Riddick is in the final year of his contract, and has always been a better pass catcher than runner, but his numbers have tailed off in the last few years. In 2018, he totaled only 555 total yards from scrimmage, his lowest total since 367 yards in 2014. Detroit also brought back Zach Zenner and used a sixth-round pick on Ty Johnson, moves which could further squeeze Riddick's chances for meaningful reps. As CBSSports.com put it, at best, Riddick will continue his work in passing situations and that's it. Based on this anticipated role, CBS considers Riddick much more of a bye-week replacement in PPR-only drafts than quality depth. It's hard to argue that point and it's certainly fair to wonder if Riddick's $3.5 million base salary might not make him expendable at some point before Week 1.
Theo Riddick 2018 Outlook
Riddick caught 53 passes in 2017 but wasn't the same dynamic weapon as he was in previous seasons. Still, Bleacher Report contends that Riddick's injury history is the only reason that he's not a more productive back. He's an explosive threat as a runner to the edge and as a receiver out of the backfield, but the injuries have restricted him to a third-down role in Detroit. He's capable of producing more, but the Lions have wisely been cautious with his workload. Why the love? As FantasyPros noted, the 2017 Offensive Rookie of the Year Alvin Kamara broke a tackle once every 3.5 touches, the best mark in the NFL. Riddick was next-closest at 3.8 touches so he still has the skills to produce. But the concerns are obvious: Ameer Abdullah is back. So are Zach Zenner, Dwayne Washington and Tion Green. In addition, free-agent LeGarrette Blount joined the team and the Lions dealt a fourth-round pick to move up to select Kerryon Johnson in the second round of April’s draft. Toss in rookie FB Nick Bawden and you have eight guys battling for probably four or five roster spots. All that said, expect Riddick to not only be on the final roster, but also to retain his receiving back role.
