Rex Burkhead 2020 Outlook
As CBSSports.com noted, Burkhead will again be a reserve running back for the Patriots this season, but with Sony Michel coming off foot surgery Burkhead might be a bit more worthy from a fantasy perspective. The problem, of course, is if Michel is healthy, Burkhead, at best, will be No. 3 on the depth chart behind Michel and James White. Like White, Burkhead was effective with the ball in his hands, but the ball just wasn’t in his hands all that much. He scored at least 13 PPR points in four games in 2019 but has had a hard time staying healthy. And even if Michel opens training camp on the PUP list, it seems more likely second-year man Damien Harris would get first shot at the co-lead role alongside White. Harris, a 2019 third-round draft choice from Alabama who played in just two games as a rookie, could provide valuable insurance for Michel. He averaged 6.4 yards per carry on 477 attempts in college, which set the Alabama career mark for those with at least 400 carries. That said, he finished his rookie season with four carries for 12 yards.
Rex Burkhead 2019 Outlook
Burkhead showed his value to the Patriots in last year’s postseason by scoring three touchdowns in the team's first two playoff wins and picking up 58 yards against the Rams in Super Bowl LIII. Burkhead's efforts also served to illustrate exactly what the team misses when he's unable to play. Indeed, after missing chunks of time in each of his first two seasons with the team, Burkhead has been working on ways to keep that from happening again in 2019. In particular, Burkhead said he's doing yoga and Pilates because he believes increased flexibility "helps prevent injuries." The Patriots have other options in the backfield, but Burkhead's productivity has been a boost to their offense whenever he's been healthy. As ESPN's Mike Clay notes, over 12 games in 2017, Burkhead played 25 percent of the snaps, handled 22 percent of the designed runs, ran a route on 24 percent of the team's pass plays and racked up a 9 percent target share. In 11 games last season, his marks were 27, 22, 23 and 8 percent, respectively. Burkhead certainly has a defined role in this offense, one that is unlikely to disappear in 2019. As a result, anything he can do to stay on the field will be welcomed in New England and by fantasy owners.
Rex Burkhead 2018 Outlook
As NFL.com's Chris Wesseling put it, "Good luck dissecting the Patriots' backfield pecking order now that Dion Lewis is in Tennessee. ..." Wesseling went on to note that New England's first-round investment in Sony Michel indicates the rookie will be featured immediately, but he'll have plenty of competition from passing-down specialist James White, jack-of-all-trades Burkhead, holdover Mike Gillislee and former Bengals power back Jeremy Hill. Remember, however; it wasn't until Burkhead sprained his knee in early December last season that Lewis finally wrested control of the backfield. Now that Burkhead is healthy again, running backs coach Ivan Fears has high expectations for 2018. "Rex is something special," Fears said. "I like him. ..." Burkhead managed to find the end zone eight times in just 10 games last season, averaging a respectable 5.5 yards per touch. Even after he was rewarded with a new three-year contract in March, don’t automatically expect Burkhead to be the lead man in this committee. HC Bill Belichick and play-caller Josh McDaniels tend to divvy up backfield responsibilities based upon that week's matchup and the hot hand. It's easy to imagine a committee attack led by Michel, with White entering in obvious passing situations and Burkhead utilized as a versatile red-zone weapon.
