Julio Jones 2020 Outlook
In case you missed it, Atlanta is poised to become the first team in the common draft era to start 10 former first-round picks on offense, thanks to the acquisitions of running back Todd Gurley and tight end Hayden Hurst. Between them and the continued emergence of No. 2 receiver Calvin Ridley, Matt Ryan and Jones should continue to perform at an all-world level as their prolific partnership -- Ryan is the only player in the NFL to top 4,000 passing yards in each of the nine seasons since Jones was drafted, and no one has more than Jones' 12,125 receiving yards in that span -- stretches into a 10th season. He saw a slight decline in his fantasy points per touch compared to 2018 (2.84), but he still ranked third among wideouts in points per game. 2019 was also the first time since 2014 where Jones didn't lead the league in yards per route run. But Atlanta's receivers were targeted 421 times in 2019, the most in the NFL. As NFL.com's Cynthia Frelund noted, only the Chiefs called more passing plays on first down in the first half of games (64.2 percent) than the Falcons (55.3 percent) which gives us some clues about how their playbook works. And for this offense Jones is going to remain the tip of that passing-game spear.
Julio Jones 2019 Outlook
After a bumpy 2018 offseason in which his contract became an issue, GM Thomas Dimitroff reiterated in January that "we'll take care of that business, and that will be done. ..." Wise choice. Jones caught 113 passes for a league-best 1,677 yards and eight touchdowns in 2018. His 138 receiving yards against the Buccaneers in the season finale marked the 10th time Jones surpassed the 100-yard mark on the campaign, breaking his previous franchise record of nine games with 100-plus yards which he set in 2015. In 2017, Jones led the Falcons with 88 catches for 1,444 yards and three touchdowns. He became the first player in NFL history with three games of over 250 receiving yards, when he caught 12 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns in a 34-20 win over the Buccaneers in Week 12 that year. In his eight total seasons in the league, Jones now has 698 receptions for 10,731 yards and 51 touchdowns. Assuming the contract remains a non-issue, not even a change of offensive coordinators (with Dirk Koetter returning to Atlanta to take over for the fired Steve Sarkisian) should cause any downturn in Jones’ production this season.
Julio Jones 2018 Outlook
Jones wasn't on hand when the Falcons opened their off-season workouts, just days after Falcons photos were deleted from his Instagram page, fueling speculation of unrest between Jones and the team, and quickly drawing the attention of Fantasy Nation. The team said the vanishing photos had more to do with Jones wanting a "fresh start" on social media than anything else. One source told ESPN.com's Vaughn McClure that the Instagram issue was Jones’ effort to set an example for Alabama players. Instagram aside, the five-time Pro Bowler signed a five-year, $71.25 million extension ($47 million guaranteed) in August 2015 and still has three years left on the deal. Team officials have said they feel it is important to have Jones healthy this offseason to put in the practice time with Matt Ryan, but Jones has put up monster seasons in the past regardless of his off-season efforts. Also, Jones is spending time this offseason working out with Hall of Fame receiver Terrell Owens. Don't let the "drama" throw you here, folks. As Fantasy Pros' Andrew Swanson wrote: "Jones looks like a top-5 fantasy asset, he runs top-5 fantasy asset routes and plays in an offense that should feature him predominantly in the passing game." Lack of touchdowns has been an issue, but Jones was heavily targeted in the red zone last season. Expect him to close the deal when those opportunities arise in 2018.
