A.J. Green 2022 Outlook
Green didn't have the season he envisioned in his first year in Arizona, so he re-upped for another go in the desert. Upon signing his new one-year deal with the Cardinals, Green said he knows his chemistry with quarterback Kyler Murray needs work. In fact, the veteran wideout said it was "fair" to question whether he and Murray were on the same page. Despite that, Green, who turned 34 in July, was targeted 5.75 times per game. He finished with two 100-yard games, including his first since 2018. Head coach Kliff Kingsbury, realizing the team needs Green to help fill out a receivers room that won't have Christian Kirk any longer, told the Athletic that the Cardinals "loved" what Green added to the offense. "I think another year in our system, Kyler and him building his relationship will be really good," Kingsbury added. Worth noting: The veteran silenced the concerns about his durability. After missing the 2019 season with an ankle injury, Green has played 16 games each of the last two seasons. Worth noting, even with the Cardinals adding former Raven Marquise Brown to their receiving corps on a draft-day trade, star wideout DeAndre Hopkins was suspended for the first six games of the season. There will be opportunities for Green to be a contributor early in the season -- and perhaps beyond.
A.J. Green 2021 Outlook
Green is headed west, agreeing to a one-year, $8 million deal with the Cardinals, after his time in Cincinnati ended quietly. Last season he failed to eclipse 1,000 yards in 16 games for the first time in his career. His 11.1 yards per catch, 2.9 receptions per game and two receiving touchdowns were all the lowest totals of his career. As Pro Football Focus put it, "Age and injury have likely robbed us of the player who was once one of the most dominant receivers in the game, but Green can still be a useful part of a team's receiving corps." While the chances of him rediscovering his lost step are minimal, his role now becomes one of savvy and skills at the catch point. He has always had solid hands, with five or fewer dropped passes every year since 2013, but contested catches are a low-percentage play for even the best in the league, so Green's role is not nearly as attractive as it once was. That said, he might be a fine fit in Arizona. Could we see his resurgence in an offense powered by quarterback Kyler Murray and directed by pass-friendly coach Kliff Kingsbury? Larry Fitzgerald's retirement is Green’s path to the opportunity, but nobody should have high hopes here.
