Cam Newton 2020 Outlook
As the rest of the NFL sat around in late June watching Netflix like you and me, the Patriots were doing Patriot-y things. ... Sure, Newton played only two games in 2019 due to injury. In 2018, he played in 14 while beat up. But through seven games in '18 he had 13 TDs/4 INTs and was on pace to throw for over 3,700 yards. That latter is likely why HC Bill Belichick and the Patriots made their move. Also? Newton has a 2-0 record against the Patriots during his time with the Panthers. Oh, yeah. The move also gives Newton a full training camp to earn the starting job over Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer. Newton, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL, led Carolina to three straight NFC South titles from 2013-2015, a Super Bowl, and four total post-season appearances. He went on to earn the 2015 NFL MVP award and was named to three Pro Bowls during his run in Carolina. Overall, he has passed for 29,041 yards with 182 touchdowns and 108 interceptions and has rushed for 4,806 yards and 58 touchdowns. The situation in Carolina deteriorated quickly, however, as shoulder and foot injuries took their toll, and the Covid-19 lockdown kept suitors from fully gauging his health. Now the Patriots will get the chance to cash in if Newton is in the physical shape he claims to enjoy.
Cam Newton 2019 Outlook
It was going so well. ... Newton completed a career-high 67.9 percent of his passes in 2018 for 3,385 passing yards, 24 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, but a lingering issue with his right (throwing) shoulder prompted the Panthers to shut the signal caller down with two weeks to go and Carolina all but out of the playoff hunt. Newton's accuracy and arm strength were notably hampered down the stretch, and he subsequently had an arthroscopic procedure to correct the problem the last week of January. Remember, Newton first had surgery on that same shoulder in 2017, but he waited until March which kept him out of the entire off-season program and most of training camp. This time is different. The Panthers believe Newton, who resumed throwing in June, should be ready for training camp, and they fully expect the star quarterback to be ready to start the regular season. Given his own ability to make plays with his legs and the fact he works with a supporting cast loaded with playmakers like Christian McCaffrey and young wideouts D.J. Moore and Curtis Samuel, Newton can't be overlooked in the fantasy QB1 conversation.
