Matthew Stafford 2018 Outlook
As Bleacher Report's Mark Schofield recently noted, Stafford's raw arm talent -- demonstrated by his ability to make throws with velocity and accuracy from a variety of release points -- represents his strongest trait as a passer. His 2017 tape is replete with examples of this ability. Indeed, Stafford continued the upward trajectory that he's been on since Jim Bob Cooter took over as offensive coordinator midway through the 2015 season. He finished third in the NFL with 4,446 passing yards, saw an uptick in his completion percentage and reintroduced the deep passing game to the Lions' offense last year. Stafford did commit too many turnovers (17) including seven fumbles. But some of those were due to having no running game and a poor offensive line. Still in the prime of his career, Stafford has developed into one of the better quarterbacks in the game. And the best news, based on recent performance, is that new HC Matt Patricia is keeping Cooter around as the team’s play caller. With GM Bob Quinn working to acquire the talent necessary to run the football, Stafford could benefit even more (if those efforts prove successful). That said, even if the running game does not improve, there are few quarterbacks more able -- and willing -- to carry their offense.
Matthew Stafford 2017 Outlook
Stafford played through a dislocated middle finger for the final four-plus games of the season and saw a steep decline in his play because of the injury. In 12-plus games before suffering the injury, Stafford completed 68.4 percent of his passes with 21 touchdowns and five interceptions. In 19 quarters after the injury, Stafford completed 58.6 percent of his passes with three touchdowns and five interceptions. While the injury was clearly an issue down the stretch, the eighth-year quarterback said after the season that simple rest would be the course of action rather than surgery. Meanwhile, Stafford surpassed 30,000 yards passing for his career, becoming the fastest quarterback ever to reach the mark. Stafford did it in his 109th game. The previous record was held by Dan Marino and Kurt Warner, who did it in 114 games. And unless the return of Ameer Abdullah gives the Lions' rushing attack a serious jolt, expect Stafford to continue serving as the triggerman in one of the league's pass-happier offenses.
Matthew Stafford 2016 Outlook
Half a season of Jim Bob Cooter was not enough for the Lions, who promoted him from interim to permanent OC in January. The team turned around sharply when Cooter replaced Joe Lombardi midseason, with Stafford openly praising the difference it made. It also made sense once they decided to stick with head coach Jim Caldwell, who was retained by new GM Bob Quinn. Keeping Cooter gives them the chance to build around a comfortable Stafford. The big change, of course, will be the absence of retired wideout Calvin Johnson. Stafford said he's preparing for a different-looking Lions offense without Megatron this fall. "You're going to miss a guy like that," Stafford said. The Lions have retooled their receiving corps this offseason, signing free agent Marvin Jones to replace Johnson and adding Jeremy Kerley to play the slot. Golden Tate, who led the Lions in receptions the last two years, also returns, and they'll lean more heavily on Eric Ebron and Theo Riddick. Until we see signs they've developed a viable rushing attack, expect Stafford to be plenty busy as a passer.
