Joe Flacco 2019 Outlook
Flacco's first regular season game for Denver will come in Oakland on the initial Monday night of the 2019 season, giving him a little over four months to get comfortable in the offense. But Broncos OC Rich Scangarello worked for Mike and Kyle Shanahan, as did Gary Kubiak, who was the OC in Baltimore when Flacco had a strong season in 2015. Scangarello cited that year with Kubiak as an important part of the evaluation process for how things would work in Denver with Flacco and said that Flacco is a "perfect fit" for what the team is looking to do offensively in 2019 as a result. ... Still, there are reasons for concern. As ESPN.com pointed out, Flacco never lived up to the big contract he signed with Baltimore after winning the Super Bowl, throwing 110 touchdowns and 80 interceptions the past six seasons. His Total QBR of 53.8 since 2013 ranks 28th in the NFL. Flacco can still make all the throws, but he needs a strong supporting cast around him to be consistent. It’s fair to wonder if young talents like Courtland Sutton and DaeSean Hamilton will develop fast enough to help Flacco out, especially if rookie QB Drew Lock pushes for playing time right out of the gate. Either way, fantasy owners shouldn't invest heavily in a positive outcome.
Joe Flacco 2018 Outlook
The selection of Lamar Jackson in the first round of April's draft is intriguing given the fact that Flacco has struggled in the five years since leading the team to a victory in Super Bowl XLVII. To be fair he has also dealt with various knee and back injuries over that time, which have hampered his performance. Last year, Flacco completed 352-of-549 pass attempts for 3,141 yards with 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. However, the Ravens’ offense lacked playmakers across the board. On the season, Flacco had a paltry passer rating of 80.4 as the Ravens averaged just 189.4 yards per game. Flacco's tendency to check down is one reason for that. Football Outsiders pointed out the Ravens have been a leader in "failed completions" (any completed pass that fails to gain 45 percent of needed yards on first down, 60 percent on second down, or 100 percent on third or fourth down) in recent years. Of the 35 qualified quarterbacks on the list, Flacco had the second highest failed completion percentage last season (36.1 percent) finishing only in front of rookie Mitchell Trubisky. The bottom five quarterbacks consisted of Brett Hundley, Brian Hoyer, DeShone Kizer, Trubisky and Flacco. Two were rookies, two were backups and one was a 10-year veteran -- Flacco. Also worth noting: Flacco's offensive output for the last three years combined equal 52 touchdowns and 40 picks. All in all, not the QB or offense you're looking to rely on this fantasy season.
