Matt Ryan 2022 Outlook
After moving on Carson Wentz, the Colts found an opportunity to deal for Ryan after the Falcons failed pursuit of Deshaun Watson. Ryan gives the Colts a solid, experienced starter who has played at the highest level -- albeit not in recent seasons. That said, he was named league MVP for the 2016 season, when he led the Falcons to the Super Bowl where they infamously lost to the New England Patriots despite at one point holding a 28-3 lead. So while it's true that Ryan, at 36, is significantly older than another candidate, San Francisco's Jimmy Garoppolo, who is 30, Ryan is more accomplished (he threw for 59,775 yards and 367 touchdowns during his career with the Falcons), far more durable and the Colts are scheduled to pay him $24.7 million and $28.2 million over next two seasons. So what should fantasy managers expect? Ryan, working behind a competent offensive line, should be plenty capable of keeping this offense on track. And that's good news for players like Jonathan Taylor, who is widely viewed as the No. 1 pick overall in fantasy drafts this year, and receiver Michael Pittman Jr. There isn't much in the way of proven producers beyond that, but Ryan merits QB2 status based on job security alone with his past high-level play offering additional confidence.
Matt Ryan 2021 Outlook
Arthur Smith is the new coach of the Falcons. One reason he got the job was his work with Titans QB Ryan Tannehill over the last two seasons. Tannehill, who came to Tennessee as a backup after a rocky run with the Dolphins, has been highly productive after taking over the starting job early in the 2019 season. But Smith won't be coaching his QB in Atlanta the same way. "We're gonna play to Matt's strengths just like we tried to play to Ryan's strengths," Smith said. Remember: Smith had his choice of teams, but likely chose Atlanta due in large part to Ryan's presence and the stability that comes with a successful veteran QB. As USA Today suggests, playing in a scheme geared more towards play-action passing and pre-snap motion, Ryan could quickly remind those around the league why he's one of the most consistent, statistically prolific passers in NFL history. Indeed, with Ryan, Calvin Ridley, Julio Jones and newcomer Kyle Pitts -- the team’s first-round draft investment instead of a young QB to succeed Ryan -- on the roster, the Falcons could be poised for an immediate turnaround even as they continue to make moves that benefit them in the longer term.
