Ben Roethlisberger 2020 Outlook
Roethlisberger enters his 17th season coming off a year in which he played just six quarters before undergoing season-ending elbow surgery. So it was good news in mid-May when the Steelers official Twitter feed released a video of Roethlisberger tossing a pigskin with JuJu Smith-Schuster, Ryan Switzer and James Conner. "Man, he let it rip," Switzer said. "There was no restraint, no hesitancy, he was just out there. ... On that field for the first time and throwing full-speed routes was refreshing. The control factor was taken out of it. Did some off-schedule stuff. No restraints. He threw everything -- across his body. Everything." Switzer had caught passes from Roethlisberger in February and called these recent throws "leaps and bounds different" from their earlier sessions, which is another sign that Roethlisberger is on track. Getting their signal-caller back to full health has been the top off-season goal for Pittsburgh in its effort to return to playoff contention. All signs continue to point towards Big Ben being at 100 percent when the season opens. Even at the advanced age of 38, having Roethlisberger under center immediately elevates Pittsburgh to playoff-contender status and improves the odds of his supporting cast once again being fantasy relevant.
Ben Roethlisberger 2019 Outlook
Roethlisberger, who in late April signed a three-year extension with a reported $63 million in new money, is coming off his 15th season with the Steelers. Contract aside, it's not a reach to suggest this past offseason might have as big an impact on the veteran signal caller as any other career developments to date. As ESPN's Matthew Berry put it: "You just don't lose Antonio Brown and not see it affect your fantasy value. ..." Berry went on to note that since 2014, 35.7 percent of Roethlisberger's fantasy points have come when throwing to Brown. Yes, JuJu Smith-Schuster is very good. And the team signed Donte Moncrief as a free agent. It's also possible James Washington takes a big step forward, but however the Steelers ultimately try to replace Brown, Berry reasonably contends the end result is a downgrade. He's not wrong. The question is how much of a downgrade? Berry went on to play a little "what if" with possible outcomes. "Let's be super optimistic and say they fill 90 percent of AB's production," Berry wrote. "Roethlisberger's PPG since 2014 would dip to 17.3, which last season, on a points-per-game basis, would have been QB21." Indeed, it would be wise to dial back expectations a bit.
Ben Roethlisberger 2018 Outlook
In contrast to last offseason, the Steelers have no gnawing anxiety at quarterback this year. Roethlisberger, who was a little miffed that the team drafted his heir apparent in Mason Rudolph, not only made it clear that he will return for 2018, but also reportedly told teammates that he wants to play out his contract, which runs through the 2019 season. Steelers President Art Rooney II went a step further, stating that Roethlisberger has expressed a desire to play beyond that contract. The Steelers will sit down with the quarterback's representatives to discuss a new deal "when it's the right time," according to Rooney. ... Assuming Roethlisberger, who is still playing at a high level, is indeed looking to play another three seasons, it would give the Steelers more leeway in developing Rudolph. Beyond that, the change of play callers -- from Todd Haley to former QBs coach Randy Fichtner, who possesses a personality that better suits Big Ben -- shouldn't be an issue. In eight seasons under Fichtner, Roethlisberger has completed 2,638 passes (64.6 percent) for 31,763 yards and 202 touchdowns, with a passer rating of 95.4. Those all rank in the top 10 in the NFL. Factor in the supporting cast of Le’Veon Bell, Antonio Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Martavis Bryant and Roethlisberger’s fantasy output should once again be potent.
