Philip Rivers 2020 Outlook
The Colts went all-in, signing Rivers to a one-year, $25 million deal that will relegate incumbent starter Jacoby Brissett to a backup role. The move makes sense. Coordinator Nick Sirianni previously worked as a Chargers assistant for five years and Colts HC Frank Reich also has a relationship with Rivers after serving as the Chargers' QB coach in 2013 and coordinator from 2014-2015. In addition, Indy provides Rivers with the best offensive line he's ever played behind. That said, Rivers wasn’t impressive last season, posting a 23-20 touchdown-to-interception ratio as his Chargers finished 5-11. The totals weren’t enough for Los Angeles, who deemed it unwise to retain Rivers, who (not surprisingly) still believes he has something left in the tank. Remember, Rivers, who owns more than 30 Chargers' records, ranks inside the top 10 of the NFL's all-time QB lists in numerous categories. Now, he'll be adding to those numbers playing for another team, one featuring speedy playmaker T.Y. Hilton on the outside. Worth noting: Colts receivers caught just six deep passes in 2019, the fewest in the NFL by four. It follows that they also had the lowest catch percentage on deep passes (17.6). Given how strong the offensive line and run game already are heading into 2020, optimizing the passing game seems like a wise move.
Philip Rivers 2019 Outlook
What's not to like here? As ClutchPoints.com noted, Rivers is coming off a terrific 2018 campaign in which he threw for 4,308 yards, 32 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 68.3 percent of his passes and registering a passer rating of 105.5 en route to a Pro Bowl appearance. The 37-year-old is entering his 16th NFL season, but doesn’t seem to be showing any signs of slowing down after earning Pro Bowl selections in each of the last three years. Since Rivers became a full-time starter for the Bolts back in 2006, he has made eight trips to the Pro Bowl. From a fantasy perspective, Rivers benefits from a strong offensive line, a deep group of sure-handed running backs led by Melvin Gordon, a receiving corps featuring the uber-consistent Keenan Allen and upside in the form of Mike Williams, a potential talent on the rise, and tight end Hunter Henry, who should again be healthy after sitting out last season with a torn ACL. Bottom line? Rivers consistently outperforms his fantasy draft position, which makes him a QB2 capable of cracking your starting lineup on any given week.
