John Keim noted last night, rookie running back
Evan Royster continues to look more comfortable in the Redskins’ offense.
And with fellow rookie Roy Helu having carried the ball 96 times the past four games – and feeling banged up – Royster could get more chances to set himself up for 2012.
Keim went on to explain that Royster is running with much more confidence than he was in the preseason or even when he first was promoted to the active roster -- weeks ago. He’s eliminated the stutter steps that slowed him down earlier in the season. And in the last two games Royster has run more decisively, gaining 80 yards on 16 carries.
Royster lacks legitimate speed and likely is more of a solid backup than a frontline runner.
But with Helu and possibly Tim Hightower on the roster next season, the Redskins only need a solid backup. Royster can help in pass protection as well, though he still occasionally puts his head down when blocking.
Keim went on to suggest that Royster’s improvement likely means the end for Ryan Torain in Washington. He’s been inactive the past two games and has not run well when given the opportunity ever since a 135-yard effort vs. St. Louis on Oct. 2. He hasn’t carried the ball since a Nov. 20 loss vs. Dallas. ...
For the record, Helu was limited in practice Wednesday. Helu is dealing with toe and knee issues that hindered him against the New York Giants last week. He is, however, expected to be ready for Saturday's game.
