The Facts: In case you had any doubt the Browns were all-in with Cade York as their kicker after this weekend, you shouldn’t anymore. The Browns waived kickers Chase McLaughlin and Chris Blewitt, the team announced on Monday.
Diehards Line:
The Browns selected York, thought by many to be the best kicker in this year’s draft, at No. 124, a fourth-round pick. York left LSU as the school’s record-holder for longest field goal and set a school record with 15 field goals of 50 yards are more. “Realized that is a little high for where kickers typically go, but we do think that he is an excellent prospect and has a good chance to be a good kicker for a long time,” GM Andrew Berry said on Saturday night after selecting York. The Browns signed McLaughlin last offseason and he made 15-of-21 field goals in 2021 and 36-of-37 extra points. Most notably, he struggled down the stretch, making just 2-of-6 attempts over the Browns’ final eight games. He missed the Christmas Day game in Green Bay after going on the COVID-19 list. He was initially re-signed this offseason but is now out after the Browns found their longterm answer. Blewitt was signed last offseason after former kicker Chris Naggar, filling in for McLaughlin against the Packers, struggled.
