The Facts: The Buccaneers and Godwin could not come to an agreement on a long-term contract prior to Thursday's deadline, which means the Pro Bowler will play the 2021 season on the franchise tag.
Diehards Line:
Godwin's one-year franchise tender will pay him nearly $16 million, which is nearly four times the amount he made over his entire four-year rookie contract. ... A third-round pick out of Penn State in the 2017 NFL draft, Godwin quickly established himself as one of the most complete pass-catchers in the league, and arguably the steal of that entire draft class. According to NFL.com, Godwin is key to everything the Bucs offense does. He can play anywhere, wins off the line, and is among the best route-runners in the game. Tampa GM Jason Licht knows that if he doesn't pay Godwin in 2022, someone surely will unload the coffers to do so. This year, however, Godwin will once again team up with Mike Evans, Antonio Brown and a talented group of pass-catchers to help the Bucs defend their Super Bowl title this season before likely working on a new deal to remain in Tampa Bay next offseason.
