The Facts: Something is going to have to give when it comes to the crowded New England Patriots running back position in 2021. They can't all make the final roster. Start with surefire No. 1 option Harris, who Patriots coach Bill Belichick said is "off to a really good start in preparation for the season."
Diehards Line:
According to ESPN.com's Mike Reiss, Belichick seems pleased with where the 5-11, 213-pound Harris is after leading the team with 691 yards on 137 carries (5.0 avg.) and two touchdowns last season. "Damien works extremely hard at all phases -- certainly his conditioning and training, running game, passing game, protection, route running, catching the ball," Belichick said at the conclusion of June's mandatory minicamp. "He's got a lot of skill and he can contribute in a variety of ways, and he's looking to upgrade where he is in every area."Belichick said RBs coach Ivan Fears and fellow assistant Vinnie Sunseri (a fellow Alabama alum) have worked closely with Harris, who has "responded well. ..." While the rest of the team's RB Depth chart will need to be worked out, expect Harris to open the season locked in for the lead role.
