The Facts: If the real Mayfield is anything like the virtual one, new OC Alex Van Pelt will be one happy man this season. "He's done everything I'd expect from him as a starting quarterback," Van Pelt said on Wednesday. "His work ethic is great. He jumps into other meetings that aren't required, and he'll sit in the receiver meetings when they have them and will sit in running back meetings from time to time, as well. He's all in. He's doing it exactly how we expect him to do it."
Diehards Line:Despite the Browns having no in-person offseason program, Van Pelt says Mayfield, who hosted a throwing session for about nine teammates in Austin, Texas, has quickly grasped the new offense, which is completely installed. Mayfield's new West Coast footwork, implemented by Van Pelt, is also making strides. Specifically, he has Mayfield leading with his left foot in the shotgun and streamlining his footwork from under center. Van Pelt is also thrilled with the additions to Mayfield's supporting cast, including TE Austin Hooper. With so many weapons (including Nick Chubb, Kareem Hunt, Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry), Van Pelt, who's not sure yet if he'll be calling the plays, is eager to roll out new personnel groupings each week. "We feel like we have the players at the positions where we have the ability to dictate on our terms how we are going to run the offense each week." But it all starts with Mayfield, and Van Pelt is pleased with what he's seen so far, even if it is only on a computer screen.
