The Facts: HC Andy Reid confirmed that the Chiefs want Williams to be "the full-time starter for the year" according to BJ Kissel of chiefs.com. "He's taken that challenge," Reid continued. "He wants to do this thing. He's earned the right to be that guy. And now it's a matter of production. Ya gotta go do it."
Diehards Line:
This has been the team's stance throughout the offseason. GM Brett Veach told reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine the starting job is Williams' to lose. This after Williams filled in quite capably after the team was forced to move on from Kareem Hunt last November due to off-field issues. Hunt held the NFL's rushing title in 2017 and was continuing the same trend of dominance in 2018. Still, Williams jumping in without missing a beat should have come as no surprise. As ESPN's Mike Clay noted, over the past 12 regular seasons, Reid-led running back units are averaging 17.3 offensive touchdowns per season. That includes at least 11 rushing scores the past five seasons and at least three receiving scores in all but one of the past 12 seasons. Yes, Reid has had talented backs (like Brian Westbrook, LeSean McCoy, Jamaal Charles and Hunt) during that span, but part of their success comes from Reid's reliance on a single lead back, as opposed to utilizing a committee. The addition of veteran free-agent Carlos Hyde and rookie Darwin Thompson are worth noting, along with the presence of holdovers Charcandrick West and Darrell Williams, but be certain, Damien Williams is first man up.
