The Facts: Giants co-owner Steve Tisch told the Daily News Thursday at the NFL Combine that “the Kansas City model,” as described by GM Dave Gettleman, indeed reflects the organization’s succession plan for Manning. “I would say the Kansas City model is an appropriate reference,” Tisch told the News.
Diehards Line:Tisch’s statement from the owners’ suite reinforces that the Giants appear ready to bring Manning back as their 2019 starter and also draft a first-round quarterback. Interestingly, a source told Daily News staffer Pat Leonard the Giants also had interest in recent weeks in the Eagles’ Nick Foles, who is headed to free agency. However, the club’s rhetoric this week has strengthened their commitment to keeping Manning, not replacing him. The Kansas City model refers to the Chiefs trading up to draft Patrick Mahomes at No. 10 overall in 2017, sitting him his first season, and then trading Alex Smith and handing the keys to Mahomes in 2018. Mahomes then won the NFL’s MVP this past season. The Giants hold the No. 6 overall pick in this year’s draft, and now they must decide if one of this year’s quarterbacks is a can’t-miss franchise leader. Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins would be the most likely target if Gettleman took a QB that high, but there is no guarantee he still would be on the board. Kyler Murray reportedly doesn't fit the Giants' ideal. Whatever the case, expect at least one more season of Manning in the Big Apple.
