The Facts: Chiefs GM Brett Veach told reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine that the Chiefs' starting RB job is Williams’ to lose.
Diehards Line:That jibes with what HC Andy Reid said when asked if the Chiefs believed that Williams could be a long term replacement for Kareem Hunt and if the Chiefs would look to add any new running backs through the draft. “We were happy with how Damien played,” Reid explained. “He’s a good football player. He stepped into big shoes, Kareem (Hunt) is a good football player.”
The big shoes to fill comment might be an understatement, considering Hunt held the NFL’s rushing title in 2017, and was continuing a trend of dominance in 2018. Williams stepped in after Hunt left and Spencer Ware got hurt. He was able to find success at the RB position for Kansas City, despite being the third option at the position entering the 2018 season. That success helped him to earn a contract extension, and the trust of the organization. So even if the Chiefs add another running back through the draft or undrafted free agency, it doesn’t mean the Chiefs don’t expect Williams to continue as their lead running back though. “He did a nice job for us,” Reid said. “And we look at every position to fill, but he’s established himself now as a legitimate NFL player, and we feel good about that.” So the Chiefs feel pretty good if the season started tomorrow and they had to roll with Williams as the starter and fantasy owners should be able to do the same -- perhaps at a reasonable price.
