The Facts: Stewart will be given the opportunity to compete for playing time at running back with the Giants, as, for the first time in his long NFL career, he transitions to a new team. The veteran also understands there is another reason why the Giants signed him. āIām definitely excited to go in there and share my wisdom as being a professional in this business and also learn, too, from the younger guys as well,āā Stewart said Wednesday.
Diehards Line:
It is not yet determined who Stewart will share the room with. Wayne Gallman and Paul Perkins are holdovers for the Giants at running back but there is a much bigger prize waiting out there. The Giants own the No. 2 pick in the NFL draft and could use it on Saquon Barkley, the Penn State star considered by many talent evaluators to be a once-a-decade talent. Meanwhile, Stewart turns 31 next week. He is coming off a career-worst 3.4-yard-per- carry average and signed a two-year deal worth $6.9 million, with $2.95 million in guaranteed money, so it can realistically be viewed as a one-year commitment for around $3 million. For that money, general manager Dave Gettleman is not viewing Stewart as the starting running back.
