The Facts: Make no mistake: At some point this season, Hackenberg will be the Jets' starting quarterback, because the Jets have no choice. They need to find out what they have in their mystery second-rounder before they head into the offseason and next year's quarterback-rich draft.
Diehards Line:
According to SNY.TV's Ralph Vacchiano, the only question is when it'll happen, and there's actually a reasonably good explanation for why Josh McCown should get the start on Week 1. The Jets are a young team all over and they are learning a new offense -- a scheme with which McCown has some experience. It could certainly help the development of the young offensive line, tight ends and receivers to have a quarterback who knows the plays and where to go with the ball. Then, once the players seem to have a grasp of what's going on, the Jets can plug Hackenberg in to see what he's got. But Hackenberg has to be ready. And the sooner that happens, the better for the Jets because every game with McCown at the helm is a waste of time, in a sense. There is almost no conceivable way the Jets will compete for a playoff spot this season. By the time they're ready to contend, McCown will be gone. So it's imperative that they start the clock on Hackenberg. Which isn't necessarily the best news for fantasy owners counting on Jets receivers.
