The Facts: The Ravens are adding another veteran receiver and a potential kick returner. Whalen worked out for the Ravens on Friday, according to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, and Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reports they will sign Whalen after he passed a physical.
Diehards Line:
Baltimore placed receiver Michael Campanaro on the physically unable to perform list with a toe injury, creating a need for an option in the slot and at returner. Whalen, 27, has 47 catches for 509 yards and three touchdowns in 41 games spanning five seasons. He played eight games for the Chargers last year and caught two passes for 22 yards. For his career, Whalen averages 24.2 yards on kickoff returns and 8.2 yards on punt returns. The Ravens have a young receiving corps (including Breshad Perriman) behind their top two of Mike Wallace and Jeremy Maclin, but Whalen still has to carve out a role before anybody should pay attention.
