The Facts: The Giants signed Ellison to a four-year, $18 million contract with $8 million fully guaranteed, a person familiar with the situation confirmed to NJ Advance Media.
Diehards Line:
The 6-5, 250-pound Ellison is a fullback/tight end who has spent his entire five-year career with the Vikings. Upgrading the tight end position is a priority for the Giants this offseason. The top tight ends on the free-agent market were out of the Giants' price range, so they moved to the next tier. Ellison's main asset is blocking. He got a 70.8 grade as a pass blocker and a 62.5 grade as a run blocker from Pro Football Focus last season. He played just 258 offensive snaps and another 172 snaps on special teams last season. Ellison tore the patellar tendon in right knee in the 2015 regular season finale, but he played in 16 games last season. The Giants currently have three true tight ends on their roster: Will Tye, Jerell Adams and Matt LaCosse. They also have Will Johnson, who has a similar skill set to Ellison.
