The San Diego Union-Tribune suggests that James Jones, who signed a one-year contract two days after Johnson's injury, is "attempting to make the 53-man roster," which suggests he's not a lock to do so. In addition to Keenan Allen, Travis Benjamin and Jones, Tyrell Williams and Dontrelle Inman are in the mix. Notably, SDUT's Michael Gehlken reports that Williams has made a sizable leap in his second season. The former undrafted rookie from Oregon is considered one of the most improved Chargers from 2015, better route-running among his strides. The team gave Isaiah Burse, a practice squad receiver in 2015, a look in the slot shortly after Johnson's injury. Those first-team reps have faded in recent practices.
