The Facts: The Dolphins are looking at Whalen as an under-the-radar addition that could pay dividends. This staff really likes him, and he will have a legitimate chance to win the No. 4 receiver job, though competition likely will be added. "[OC] Clyde [Christensen] has experience with him in Indy," HC Adam Gase said. "He's a guy who benefits from what we do as far as that slot position. Him understanding coverages is the first step if you're a slot player. He has the flexibility to go outside, but his big thing was third downs in Indy."
Diehards Line:
Whalen has spent the past three seasons with the Colts where he played 33 games and started three from 2013-15. Whalen totaled 45 receptions for 487 yards (10.8 avg.) and three touchdowns and added 46 punt returns for 376 yards (8.2 avg.) and 25 kickoff returns for 645 yards (25.8 avg.). He originally signed with Indianapolis as an undrafted college free agent on April 30, 2012 but was placed on injured reserve prior to the 2012 season. In 2015, Whalen played a career-high 14 games for Indianapolis and caught 19 passes for 205 yards (10.8 avg.) and one touchdown. He also recorded 12 punt returns for 85 yards (7.1 avg.) and nine kickoff returns for 244 yards (27.1 avg.). Whalen was placed on injured reserve on Dec. 21, 2015 and the Colts waived him on Jan. 1.
