The Facts: GM Doug Whaley announced that Clay agreed to restructure his contract to help create more cap space in Buffalo.

Diehards Line: The Bills signed Clay after the Dolphins placed a transition tag on him last offseason by structuring a deal for Clay’s services that the Dolphins weren’t willing to match. One of the features of that deal was a $10 million roster bonus due in March of this year that helped give Clay a cap number of $13.5 million for the 2016 season. That number wasn’t helping a tight Bills cap situation, so they made the adjustment to make it easier to swallow on Thursday. Whaley didn’t announce the particulars, but the Bills website reports that the roster bonus was converted to a signing bonus that spreads $7.5 million of the cap hit out over the next three seasons. That would leave Clay with a $9 million cap hit in each season, which the Bills hope will bring more production and fewer injuries for Clay than he experienced in his first season with the team.
