The Facts: The 49ers announced Tuesday that Celek has signed a four-year extension with the team.
Diehards Line:
Celek was set to become a free agent next month on the heels of a 19-catch season, but GM Trent Baalke said in a statement that the team didn’t want to see him walk away. The 49ers also have Vance McDonald and 2015 fourth-round pick Blake Bell at tight end. Retaining Celek keeps what the team views as a solid position group intact under new HC Chip Kelly, who worked with Garrett's brother, Brent Celek, in Philadelphia.
