The Facts: At 4 p.m. today, the final two years of Harvin's three-year contract voids and he will join the list of NFL unrestricted free agents set to hit the open market March 9.
Diehards Line:The Bills signed Harvin to a three-year deal last March, but only for salary cap purposes. The deal was essentially for one-year, with a base salary of $3 million, plus a $3 million signing bonus. The extra two years were added on to spread that bonus out over the life of the deal. But the base salary for those final two years would be $9 million for each season if the Bills were to decide not to void the contract, which was always highly unlikely. The Bills do need a receiver complement to Sammy Watkins on the other side. Harvin was productive in that role last season before he got hurt, playing only five games. If the Bills want Harvin back at a better rate, the good news is most other teams will be scared off by his injury history and past locker room issues. And Harvin himself may know that Buffalo is his best option to continue his career. The bad news is they will want him as cheap as possible given the risk, but he will most likely want to be paid much more. ... Stay tuned.
