The Facts: The Giants whittled down their running back depth on Monday, waiving Michael Cox, who suffered a season-ending injury in 2014.
Diehards Line:Cox, a seventh round draft pick out of UMass in 2013, saw playing time mostly as a kick returner over the last two seasons and actually was released prior to the start of 2014 before being re-signed to the practice squad. Cox was promoted to the active roster on October 6, but suffered a broken leg against the Seattle Seahawks, ending his season. With the Giants bringing in free agent running back Shane Vereen, Cox faced an uphill battle to make the 53-man roster behind Vereen, Rashad Jennings, and Andre Williams on the running back depth chart. It is, however, somewhat surprising that the Giants didn't at least give him a look as a backup kick returner option in training camp. The Giants don't have a ton of depth at that spot behind free agent acquisition Dwayne Harris.
