The Facts: HC Lovie Smith says the Bears won’t bring in a veteran quarterback even though Caleb Hanie is struggling, squashing speculation that they’ll sign Donovan McNabb. He also dismissed a report that offensive coordinator Mike Martz will be gone after the season.
Diehards Line:In addition to reports suggesting McNabb might be of interest, an ESPN report indicated Brett Favre would be willing to listen if the Bears called him. Apparently that won't happen. “That’s our group. We’re going to make improvements. We’re not looking on the outside,” Smith said. “We don’t have a quarterback tryout or anything like that.” That group is Hanie, rookie Nathan Enderle, and recent pickup Josh McCown. Smith isn’t considering replacing Hanie after his second straight three interception game. “Caleb’s our quarterback,” Smith said.
