The Facts: ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Redskins are “big believers” in Beck, and that signs point towards him possibly starting for the team next year.
Diehards Line:With Donovan McNabb on the way out and Rex Grossman a free agent, HC Mike Shanahan's failure to snag a signal caller in the draft certainly opens the door to the speculation. As PFT notes, the team reportedly never seriously considered a first-round QB, and never were going to trade up for one. They reportedly thought Beck gives them a better chance to win. The fact that both Schefter and fellow ESPN insider Chris Mortensen were peddling this story on national television suggests they are being told it's the case -- perhaps by Shanahan himself. But just because they are peddling it doesn't mean we have to buy it. As PFT's Gregg Rosenthal notes, Beck is turning 30 years old this year and he has one career touchdown. He hasn't started a pro game since 2007 and that one didn't go well. ... Given all that we'll advise against betting the ranch on this report coming to fruition.
