The Facts: Garcia left the door open to wedging his way in as the starter in a radio interview with KLAC in Los Angeles. “I understand that the role I have basically assumes going into Oakland knowing that JaMarcus [Russell] was drafted to be the starting QB there," Garcia said. "But I think there has to be some realization at some point as to putting the best players on the field that are you going to give you the best chance to win."
Diehards Line:In previous discussions with the media, Garcia said he felt he could still be a starter, but realized his role in Oakland. As Oakland Tribune staffer Jerry McDonald framed it: "There was no gray area, no inferences about winning the starting job. ..." While Garcia remained diplomatic during this latest interview, there was a clear but subtle shift in his stance. Perhaps the reports of Russell's less-than-impressive effort in last week's mini-camp were accurate; accurate enough at least for Garcia to begin the lobbying process.
