According to
CSNPhilly.com's Reuben Frank, it's already a done deal:
Andy Reid has been fired after 14 years as head coach of the Eagles. Citing two sources, Frank reports that owner
Jeff Lurie has told Reid, who has one year remaining on his contract, would not return in 2013.
With 14 years of service, Reid was the reigning dean of NFL coaches.
Reid, 54, is a three-time NFL Coach of the Year, winning the honor after the 2000, 2002 and 2010 seasons. Even with this 2012 dismal season, Reid finishes with a 130-93-1 regular season record and a .583 winning percentage.
According to Frank, the list of logical candidates for the Eagles’ first head coaching vacancy in 14 years are current NFL defensive coordinators Perry Fewell of the Giants, Vic Fangio of the 49ers, Mike Zimmer of the Bengals; offensive coordinators Tom Clement of the Packers, Greg Roman of the 49ers and Rick Dennison of the Texans; and Packers highly regarded QBs coach Ben McAdoo.
If Lurie opted for a college head coach, Oregon’s Chip Kelly, Penn State’s Bill O’Brien and Stanford’s David Shaw could be candidates.
Less likely is former NFL head coach like Jon Gruden or Bill Cowher, the former Steelers coach.
Kelly has been very prominently mentioned in recent weeks.
As for Reid, it’s widely assumed that because of his success as a head coach for most of his tenure in Philadelphia he’ll have no trouble getting another head coaching job -- if he decides to return immediately to coaching.
With the Chargers expected to fire Norv Turner after six years and no playoff appearances the last three, the San Diego opening is certainly one that would make sense for Reid, a Southern California native.
But Reid, who assumed the title of vice president of football operations with the Eagles in 2001, would not likely consider a job in which he doesn’t have total control of personnel and that doesn't seem to be a possibility in San Diego.
