The Facts: The Saints have re-signed free agent wide receiver Smith to a two-year, $6 million contract according to Field Yates of ESPN.
Diehards Line:
Smith's deal comes with $2 million guaranteed and incentives that can earn him an additional $4.5 million on top of the $6 million base. With the Saints quite thin at receiver, it's a move that makes sense for both sides. Smith had a real opportunity to raise his profile in his contract year with Michael Thomas out for the entire 2021 season but couldn't stay healthy, missing six games and catching only 32 passes for 377 yards and three touchdowns. In 2022, Smith will again operate as the deep threat in a Saints offense that rarely throws deep. His success-and the success of the entire offense-will likely depend on how close to peak form Thomas is and how well the receivers mesh with QB Jameis Winston. If the Saints are willing to let Jameis be the gunslinger we all know he can be but were unwilling to unleash in 2021, Smith could have some fantasy relevance.
