The Facts: According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Chiefs intend to re-sign Henne on a one-year deal worth $2 million.
Diehards Line:
This will mark his fifth consecutive season returning as the backup QB to Patrick Mahomes, but he could have some competition this time around. In Week 11, the Chiefs signed UDFA QB Shane Buechele to the 53-man roster. He seems to be someone the organization likes quite a bit and depending on Henne’s contract guarantees, it’s possible that a player like Buechele could beat out the veteran in training camp and the preseason. Buechele is already getting work in with Patrick Mahomes this offseason. According to NFL Network reporter James Palmer, Henne considered retirement before deciding to come back to Kansas City for another run with the team. Henne has appeared in eight regular-season games since 2018, starting the Chiefs’ Week 17 game against the Los Angeles Chargers in 2020. He’s most known for his postseason heroics against the Cleveland Browns in the divisional round of the playoffs in 2020. After Mahomes was knocked out of the game with a concussion, Henne led the team to victory converting a third-and-14 run and a fourth-down pass to Tyreek Hill to seal the victory.
