The Facts: In mid-January, Peterson reiterated he wanted to remain with the Vikings and finish his career in Minnesota, but acknowledged his price tag ($18 million this season) might be too high for the team. Peterson went on to mention the Giants, Buccaneers and Texans as teams he has interest in if things do not work out for him with the Vikings. Interest, though, has to be reciprocal, and there are no indications the Giants want to head in that direction.
Diehards Line:As Post staffer Paul Schwartz explained, general manager Jerry Reese and coach Ben McAdoo are purging age and stressing youth on the roster — just two players under contract, Eli Manning and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, are 30 or older. Peterson took to Twitter to suggest the Giants’ moves this offseason are “interesting,” but in fact the release of Rashad Jennings, 32, and Victor Cruz, 30, were anticipated. Meanwhile, Peterson played in only one game in 2014, as he sat out a league-mandated suspension after he was indicted on charges of reckless or negligent injury to a child after it was revealed he used a switch to spank his son. Schwartz went on to suggest that given the Giants’ embarrassing issues this past season with Josh Brown and his domestic-abuse charge, it is unlikely co-owner John Mara would sign off on signing Peterson. Plus, from a football standpoint, Peterson in no way fits into McAdoo’s West Coast offensive system. Peterson is most effective when he runs behind a fullback, but McAdoo’s offense does not involve a fullback — there was none on the roster in 2016. Plus, McAdoo relies heavily on shotgun formations — again, not a strong suit of Peterson’s. All that before we even get to the discussion of price.
