The Facts: With roughly a month to go until the deadline for signing a long-term extension, Cousins indicated that much work remains. "No progress to speak of," Cousins at his football camp in Lorton, Va., on Saturday.
Diehards Line:
Cousins is under contract with the Redskins for the 2016 season, having signed the nearly $20 million franchise tender on March 3. Both the player and the team have expressed an interest in reaching a multi-year contract extension, but the deadline to hammer one out—July 15—is fast approaching. If the Redskins and Cousins’ agent, Mike McCartney, are unable to reach an agreement prior to that date, Cousins must play next season on the one-year tag. Although Cousins did not come right out and say it, he seemed to indicate that the approaching deadline could pressure the sides to return to the negotiating table. Recent history has also proven that to be case; in 2015, franchised players Dez Bryant, Demaryius Thomas and Justin Houston all signed multi-year extensions with their respective teams at the deadline. Stay tuned.
